Water Footprint Consulting
By calculating the water footprint, it is possible to quantify the freshwater consumption associated with products, processes, and organizations, providing a comprehensive overview of an activity’s water impact.
Based on the LCA methodology and the ISO 14046 standard, the Water Footprint takes into account three main components:blue water, which refers to the withdrawal of surface and groundwater resources;green water, which is rainwater absorbed by the soil and used primarily for agricultural purposes; andgray water, which represents the volume of water needed to dilute pollutants and restore the quality of water resources.
Our water footprint consulting services are designed to
- help companies calculate their water footprint
- Obtain ISO 14046 certification ( third-party verification)
- develop strategies to optimize water consumption
Why calculate water footprint?
Calculating the water footprint helps identify, measure, and quantify the different types of water use with the goal of optimizing water use in a more sustainable way. There are several benefits to calculating a water footprint, including:
Reduction in Water Consumption and Costs
A water footprint analysis allows you to identify where water is being used inefficiently throughout production processes and the supply chain. This enables you to take targeted action to reduce waste, optimize water use, and generate tangible economic benefits.
Reducing Risks Related to Water Availability
It’s not just about how much water you use, but also where you use it. Calculating your water footprint highlights any issues related to water stress in specific regions, helping you prevent operational risks and strengthen the resilience of your supply chain.
Respond to requests from clients and stakeholders
More and more companies and investors are demanding transparent data on water use. A water footprint—especially one verified by a third party—allows you to demonstrate a structured and credible approach, improving your competitive positioning and facilitating access to more demanding supply chains and markets.
What are the steps involved in our water footprint consulting service?
Calculating the water footprint is a strategic decision for all companies that wish to reduce their water impact. Our consulting support for calculating the water footprint consists of the following steps:
1. Definition of the Study’s Objectives and Scope
The objectives of the analysis (e.g., internal improvement, client requests, reporting), its scope (product, process, or organization), and the system boundaries are defined. At this stage, the methodological assumptions and the indicators to be used are also established.
2. Data Collection and System Modeling
Data on direct and indirect water consumption throughout the life cycle (raw materials, production, transportation, use, end of life) are collected. The system is then modeled according to an LCA approach.
3. Quantification of the water footprint
The water footprint is quantified by considering not only the volumes of water used, but also the geographic context and the potential impacts associated with water scarcity. This step makes it possible to identify the most critical stages.
4. Interpretation of Results and Definition of Actions
The results are analyzed to identify opportunities for improvement, reduce consumption, and mitigate risks. If necessary, we assist the company in communicating the results and, if applicable, facilitating third-party verification.
Which standards does the water footprint follow?
Our approach to assessing water footprints follows internationally recognized standards and guidelines. We use methodologies that comply with the ISO 14046 standard, ensuring robust and comprehensive water footprint assessments. In addition, we draw on the expertise of the Water Footprint Network and its Global Water Footprint Standard, which provide a robust framework for calculating and interpreting water footprints at various scales.
Where do we work?
We offer consulting services for calculating water footprints throughout Italy and internationally, thanks in part to our joining the TÜV AUSTRIA group.
