Eco Design Consulting & ESPR Compliance
Eco design refers to an approach to product design that integrates sustainability and circularity from the earliest stages of product development.
However, it is not enough to simply design with sustainability in mind: it is necessary to start with solid data and be able to measure and document the environmental performance of one’s products. For this reason, every effective ecodesign project is based on a key methodology: the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
In fact, through LCA analysis, it is possible to accurately quantify a product’s environmental impacts throughout its life cycle, identify areas for improvement, and support design decisions based on objective data.
Furthermore, this approach allows companies to prepare for new European regulatory requirements (the Ecodesign Regulation—ESPR), suchas the Digital Product Passport (DPP) requirement.
Why is eco design a strategic choice?
Sustainable product design based on the eco design approach not only has clear positive effects on the environment and sustainability, but also enables companies to enjoy numerous benefits.
Let’s take a look at them:
ESPR Compliance (Ecodesign Regulation)
The Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR) requires companies to incorporate ecodesign and sustainability criteria into their product design. Among its objectives are improving product durability, repairability, and energy efficiency.
Cost Savings
Companies that adopt eco-design practices can achieve significant cost savings resulting from greater energy efficiency, reduced waste, lower disposal costs (less waste), reduced resource consumption, and process optimization.
Competitive Advantages
Adopting eco-design not only helps boost a company’s reputation but also positions it as a company that invests in innovation.
DPP services: which data do you need for the Digital Product Passport?
One of the key elements introduced by the new Ecodesign Regulation is the Digital Product Passport (DPP).
This is a digital system designed to collect structured environmental (and other) information about the product. The main categories of data that companies will be required to provide are:
- Product Environmental Data ( Life Cycle Impacts, Resource and Energy Consumption, Emissions)
- Information on Materials and Components ( Recycled Content, Product Composition, Presence of Harmful Substances)
- Data on Use and End-of-Life
- Traceability
What are the steps involved in our product Eco Design support?
We support you through a structured process that begins with measuring impacts and leads to the development of concrete solutions for improvement, all the way through to preparing the data required by future regulations.
1. LCA Analysis of the Product
Let’s start with an Life Cycle Assessment to measure environmental impacts throughout the product’s entire life cycle.
Get a clear, quantitative snapshot of emissions, resource consumption, and key impacts.
2. Identification of Critical Areas
Let’s analyze the results to identify the most significant environmental hotspots. Understand which materials, processes, or life cycle stages generate the greatest impacts. This way, you can focus your efforts where they truly make a difference.
3. Eco Design Proposals
We develop concrete proposals to improve the product: materials, processes, design, and end-of-life. Our solutions are based on LCA data—not on assumptions—and are designed to reduce environmental impacts and costs. The goal is to make the product more sustainable and competitive.
4. ESPR Compliance and Digital Produt Passport
We’ll help you structure the data required for the Digital Product Passport. We’ll organize the information on materials, impacts, and performance metrics required by the regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Ollum help Italian manufacturing companies integrate sustainability into their R&D and product development?
Ollum brings advanced expertise in LCA and LCC methodologies to support eco-design strategies, identifying combinations of materials and processes that optimize both environmental and economic performance. Eco-design projects are more common in manufacturing companies that already have an in-house R&D team for laboratory testing—which is necessary to verify compliance with industry technical requirements (strength, etc.). Ollum provides the LCA/LCC methodological framework, while the in-house team is responsible for the technical validation of materials.
Does Ollum also work on pilot projects involving eco-design of products to reduce their environmental impact throughout their life cycle?
Ollum develops eco-design projects to reduce the environmental impact of products and packaging throughout their entire life cycle. The reference methodology is LCA combined with LCC: together, they enable the identification of design choices that optimize both environmental sustainability and economic efficiency. These projects are carried out in collaboration with the client company’s internal R&D team, which manages laboratory testing for the technical validation of materials. Ollum focuses on the methodological and analytical aspects: the two areas of expertise are complementary.
