EPD Consultant: get specialized support
The EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) certification is a document that provides a standardized and verified way to communicate a product’s environmental impacts, based on alife cycle assessment (LCA). We can therefore say that EPD is the certification of the LCA study.
Through EPD certification, a product’s environmental impacts are communicated in a standardized and comparable manner; as a result, EPD-certified products are strategically positioned in the market. For this reason, EPDs are increasingly in demand among B2B clients and in tenders governed by Green Public Procurement.
Ollum supports companies in developing their LCA study and the EPD certification process, while also guiding them in choosing the solution best suited to their specific context. In some cases, the best strategy isa single EPD; in others,an average EPD; whereas for companies with many similar products, it may be more effective to develop an LCA tool to make the process faster and more scalable.
In specific cases, when there is no suitable PCR for the product category, we can also assist with the development of the PCR in collaboration with the selected program operator.
Why Obtain EPD Certification?
Working with an Ollum EPD consultant to obtain an Environmental Product Declaration can provide your company with a number of competitive advantages.
Let’s take a look at them:
Compliance with Green Public Procurement and Advantages in Bids
In many sectors, particularly in the construction industry, EPD certification is a key factor in meeting the Minimum Environmental Criteria and strengthening a product’s position in public tenders.
Better positioning in B2B markets
The EPD allows companies to report verified and comparable LCA environmental data, which is increasingly in demand by B2B clients, designers, and technical stakeholders. Holding an EPD certification therefore makes the product much more competitive in the market.
Greater transparency and brand strengthening
Obtaining EPD certification demonstrates your commitment to sustainability, enhancing your brand’s reputation and building trust in your brand. In fact, it is one of the most widely recognized environmental labels in the world, as it is based on a scientific calculation of environmental impacts.
Identify inefficiencies
The LCA study underlying the EPD helps identify inefficiencies and waste, providing the foundation for developing improvement strategies in line with the principles of the circular economy and eco-design.
Preparing for Regulatory Requirements
Environmental transparency requirements are increasing in the EU: for example, in Sweden, the EPD is already mandatory for construction products. The Ecodesign Regulation, as well as the CPR, with the introduction of the Digital Product Passport, will make the inclusion of environmental information mandatory. Having an EPD will make it easier to comply with future requirements.
LEED and BREEAM Credits
In specific design contexts, products with an EPD can help earn credits under building sustainability protocols such as LEED and BREEAM.
Who is eligible for EPD certification?
Any company interested in transparently communicating the environmental impact of its products or services can begin the process of obtaining EPD certification.
To obtain an EPD, it is essential to have detailed information on the life cycle of the product to be certified. Ollum’s EPD consultants support you throughout this process, by conducting necessary LCA studies required and preparing you for the assessment by the certifying body, which is essential for final validation.
How does our EPD consulting service work?
1. Initial Analysis and Strategy Development
We begin by assessing the product, the target market, and the company’s objectives. In this phase, we determine the most appropriate approach: a single-product EPD, an average EPD, an EPD for a representative product, an EPD developed using a tool, or, if necessary, the development of a PCR.
2. Data Collection and LCA Study
We collect all the necessary information on the product’s life cycle in accordance with the applicable PCR, and we conduct the LCA study, analyzing consumption, emissions, resource use, and other relevant environmental impacts.
3. Preparation of the declaration and assistance with the audit
We convert the results of the LCA study into the documentation required for EPD certification and prepare you for the verification phase conducted by the accredited body.
4. Publication of the EPD
Once the verification is complete, we’ll help you leverage the EPD as part of your business and sustainability strategy to maximize its value for clients, designers, and stakeholders.
What standards does our EPD service rely on?
The rules to follow for EPD certifications are numerous, since the goal is to regulate the LCA calculation for different product categories, by defining the steps to follow, metrics to consider, and much more. In particular, reference is made to international standards such as ISO 14025, which defines the requirements for the development of Type III environmental certifications (such as EPDs), and the ISO 14040 series, on which the LCA calculation is based. In addition, to obtain an EPD certificate, you must be familiar with the PCR applicable to the product you wish to certify and the EPD Regulation, both published by the Italian Italian operator EPDItaly or by EPD International.
Automated EPD certification through our digital platform
For companies with many similar products, in some cases it may be more efficient to develop an LCA tool or an EPD tool, in order to speed up the production of environmental studies and declarations and make the process more scalable.

FDES Certification
Ollum can also help you obtain FDES certification (Fact Sheet Environmental Environmental and Health) for construction products intended for the French market. Similar to the EPD, the FDES is based on calculations from the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), but in addition to information on environmental impacts, it also requires health-related information. The FDES must be verified by an accredited auditor before being published on the French government’s INIES website, where FDES for construction products are made available.
PEP Ecopassport
Ollum can also assist you in obtaining PEP Ecopassport certification for electrical and electronic products intended for the construction industry, such as HVAC equipment, lighting, and energy management systems. Similar to the EPD, the PEP Ecopassport is based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculations and provides transparent, verified information on a product’s environmental impacts throughout its entire life cycle. The declaration must be verified by an accredited third-party verifier and, once validated, is published in the official PEP Ecopassport database, where it is freely accessible to designers, contracting authorities, and major clients.
